How to use Ravelry patterns offline on iPhone and iPad

Reviewed 4 min read

The quick answer

To use a Ravelry pattern offline, download the PDF while connected to the internet, open the saved file, then test it with Wi-Fi and mobile data turned off. In Stashora, downloaded PDFs and locally saved projects, stash, and row counters are available offline. Pattern searches, forums, new downloads, and sync still need a connection.

A library entry is not always a downloaded PDF

A pattern listing tells you about a design. A library entry records something in your collection. Neither alone proves that a PDF has been saved on this device. Some designs link to another website or a print publication; others offer a Ravelry-hosted file.

For a Ravelry download, your account needs access to the file. Buying or receiving a pattern elsewhere does not automatically make it downloadable through Ravelry. Check the source of the pattern and the account that holds the purchase.

Prepare your pattern before going offline

Stashora supports owned library PDF downloads and offline access to saved files. Use annotations and a reading guide to keep your place in the instructions.

  1. Connect to the internet and connect the Ravelry account that owns the pattern.
  2. Find the pattern in your library and download the available owned PDF. If several files are offered, choose the language and instructions you need.
  3. Open the downloaded file and check every page you will use, including charts, abbreviations, finishing instructions, and any separate file.
  4. Keep a project note with your size, tools, yarn, and the next instruction. A file alone will not tell you where you stopped.
  5. Turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data, close the file, and reopen it. Recheck after changing devices; a download on one device is not proof of a download on another.

If the PDF is missing, check these first

If the file is still unavailable, inspect the pattern’s original purchase or download page. Keep the error text and pattern name when contacting support. Avoid deleting the only local copy while you are offline.

  • Account: are you using the same Ravelry account that owns the download?
  • Source: is this a Ravelry-hosted PDF, an external web pattern, or a pattern in a book?
  • File: did the download finish, or are you only looking at the library cover?
  • Device: did you download the PDF on this phone or on another device?
  • Connection: reconnect and try opening the available download again before your next offline session.

Make returning to the pattern easier

Before closing a project, record the last completed row and the next action. For example: “Body row 48 finished; start row 49 in the main color.” If you are following a repeat, include the repeat number as well.

For a trip, check external instructions too. A video link or web tutorial printed inside a downloaded PDF still needs internet access. Write down any essential reminder in your project notes beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the whole Ravelry website offline?

No. Offline access in Stashora covers downloaded pattern PDFs and locally saved stash, projects, and row counters. Live Ravelry browsing, forums, new downloads, and sync require internet access.

Why is my Ravelry pattern not available as a PDF?

Some Ravelry listings refer to external websites or print publications. For a downloadable file, your account must have access to that Ravelry download. Check the pattern source and the account used for the purchase.

How do I check that a PDF is ready for offline use?

Open the downloaded file on the device you will use, turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data, and reopen it. Check the pages and any separate chart files you need before leaving.
