How to use the calculator
- Find the length and weight printed on the yarn’s label. Select yards or meters to match the length you enter.
- Enter the full skein’s label weight in grams. This is the weight of the original skein, not a yarn category such as DK or worsted.
- Weigh the remaining yarn and enter that mass in grams. Remove the band and subtract the weight of any container or cone.
- Read the estimated length in both meters and yards. Record the result with the yarn name and color so it stays useful.
The formula, with worked examples
Remaining length = remaining grams × label length ÷ label grams. The first result uses the unit printed on your label. Convert using 1 yard = 0.9144 meters; divide meters by 0.9144 to get yards.
The calculator uses a proportional estimate: the remaining yarn is assumed to have the same length per gram as the labeled skein. It does not estimate yarn requirements from garment size or stitch count.

What can make the estimate less accurate?
Scale precision, the label’s nominal quantities, moisture, and non-yarn weight can all affect the result. Small leftovers are especially sensitive to a one-gram weighing difference. Round conservatively when you are close to a pattern’s requirement.
Use a separate calculation for each yarn. Two yarns in the same weight category do not necessarily have the same meters per gram. If the label is missing, use a verified specification for the exact yarn or measure a known sample carefully; the category alone is not enough.
Can you make a project with the result?
Compare your estimated available length with the pattern’s requirement for your chosen size, using the same unit. For multiple colors, compare each color separately. Yarn already allocated to another project is not available just because it is still physically in the box.
Allow for your swatch, finishing, and any changes to length or fit. Gauge, fiber, and fabric matter when substituting yarn: enough meters alone does not establish a suitable substitute. Check the pattern and your swatch before starting.
Keep the number with your yarn
Write down the yarn name, color, measured weight, estimated length, and storage location together. Update the record after a project rather than repeatedly reconstructing the same leftover calculation.

How do I convert grams of yarn to yards?
Multiply the remaining grams by the label yardage, then divide by the label weight in grams. If your label gives meters, calculate the remaining meters first and divide by 0.9144 to convert to yards.
Can I use the calculator for crochet yarn?
Yes. It estimates the length of the yarn itself, so the same formula works for knitting or crochet yarn. It does not predict how much yarn a particular stitch pattern will consume.
Can I enter more than one full skein’s weight?
Yes, if all the yarn is the same product with the same label ratio. For example, you can enter the combined weight of two full skeins and a partial skein. Calculate different yarns separately.
